With over twenty years of reporting experience under his belt, Charles Barkley understands the sports media landscape. He also shares his perspective on the reporting strategies of various networks involved in the broadcasting business, including the one that will air ‘Inside the NBA’ from next season. During a crossover between ESPN and TNT before the NBA Cup Semifinals, Barkley shared some a critique he had of the Disney-owned network.
Barkley began his tirade by complimenting Bob Myers for reigning in Stephen A. Smith and asking him to avoid talking about the Los Angeles Lakers. “Bob, I love what you said last segment. When we come work for y’all next year, are we obligated to talk about the Lakers and the damn Cowboys all the time, like Stephen A. does?” Barkley said.
Myers quipped that the New York Knicks were on that list of big market essentials too. But Chuck didn’t have as much of an issue with covering their season. “The Knicks got a good team. We have to talk about the Cowboys and the sorry a** Lakers all the time,” the 1993 NBA MVP added.
Much like he did in his playing days, Barkley as a reporter doesn’t harbor any biases towards the biggest markets in the league. In fact, he seems saturated with the coverage on their mediocre seasons. However, Chuck’s frustration was balanced out by Stephen A.’s pragmatic approach.
“First of all, right now, they’re both sorry a**es, so let’s get that out of the way,” Smith said about the Lakers and the Cowboys. “Secondly, here’s the deal. You have to pay attention to the American people. If the American people say that’s what they want to hear, that’s a message I hear.”
Barkley was not having any of it. As a man with his finger on the pulse, he called Smith out immediately. “The American people are saying ‘Stop forcing it down my throat!’” the 11-time All-Star joked.
Sir Charles had previously said he would never work for ESPN
Despite finding tremendous success in broadcasting, the 61-year-old had remained open to the possibility of walking away from the public eye in recent years. Since becoming a grandfather, Barkley’s feelings about work have changed and the only reason he re-signed with TNT was because of the culture and the environment they had cultivated.
However, when Turner Sports’ NBA future was still up in the air, Chuck made it abundantly clear that he would much rather retire than work for a corporate brand like ESPN. “They’re not gonna work me like a dog,” Barkley said in May. “ESPN Radio, ESPN2, ESPN Deportes. I mean H-LL NO! As much as I love ESPN, I just turned 61. The notion that I’m going to be working like a dog into my mid-60s, that’s definitely not going to happen.”
His comments found their way to the watchful eye of Malika Andrews, who made sure to bring them up during the segment ‘Who Said That?’ Barkley couldn’t help but laugh as Smith joked, “Chuck, who’s the person that said they would never wanna work for ESPN?”
The light-hearted banter between the sporting networks bodes well for their future collaborations. Thankfully for Barkley, the current deal between TNT and ESPN allows the Inside Guys to continue producing their show with Turner Sports. ESPN only holds the license to broadcast their program and the only change we can expect is more banter between the two networks’ analysts.
Scoring six goals might be common in the school playground or down the local park, but it is much more rare in professional football.
While hat-tricks are scored fairly frequently, even four and five-goal hauls are exceptional at the highest level.
Double hat-tricks are scarce, but there have been a number of players who have achieved the feat over the years.
Here, a look at the men who did it and the teams they punished…
16. Wesley Sonck
One of the best Belgian forwards of his generation, Wesley Sonck played for the likes of Ajax and Borussia Mönchengladbach in his career, but was most successful in his homeland with Genk.
In three prolific seasons with the Belgian club, Sonck scored 80 goals, including six in a 9-0 win over Mechelen in a top-flight match in November 2002.
15. Ted MacDougall
A Scottish forward who spent virtually his entire career in England, Ted MacDougall holds the record for the most goals by a player in an FA Cup tie.
The best features, fun and footballing quizzes, straight to your inbox every week.
MacDougall scored nine times for Bournemouth in an 11-0 win over Margate in the cup in November 1971, setting a mark which may never be beaten.
14. Eulogio Martínez
Only once in the history of the Copa del Rey has a player scored a double hat-trick and that was Eulogio Martínez in May 1957.
Martínez, who was born in Paraguay but later represented Spain, hit seven goals in an 8-1 win over Atlético Madrid. A two-time league and cup winner with Barça, he also scored the first-ever goal at Camp Nou in its inauguration in September 1957.
13. Fernando Peyroteo
A legendary figure of Portuguese football, Fernando Peyroteo spent his entire career at Sporting CP and scored over 500 goals for the Lisbon side.
Peyroteo scored nine goals in a 14-0 win over Leça in February 1942 and eight in a 12-1 thrashing of Boavista in October 1948.
12. Afonso Alves
Afonso Alves’ career may not have quite lived up to its early promise, but the Brazilian striker definitely had his moments.
His most memorable match came for Heerenveen against Heracles Almelo in the Dutch Eredivisie in October 2007, when he scored seven goals in a 9-0 win. A move to Middlesbrough followed, but was less successful, and he saw out his career in Qatar.
11. Silvio Piola
The first man to score a double hat-trick in Serie A and one of two players ever to achieve the feat, Silvio Piola netted six goals for Pro Vercelli in a 7-2 win over Fiorentina in October 1933.
A World Cup winner with Italy in 1938, Piola also represented Lazio and Juventus and was a three-time Serie A runner-up.
10. Omar Sívori
One of just two players in Serie A history to have scored six goals in a match, Omar Sívori hit his double hat-trick in a huge win for Juventus.
Sívori struck six times as Juve thrashed rivals Inter 9-1 in June 1961. The Argentine-Italian netted the first three for the Bianconeri, later adding his side’s fifth, seventh and ninth goals in a historic win.
9. Erling Haaland
Double hat-trick? Erling Haaland went one better, as he usually does, by hitting a triple hat-trick for Norway’s Under-20 side against Honduras at the U-20 World Cup in 2019.
Haaland was 18 years old at the time and playing for RB Salzburg. His nine-goal haul in Norway’s 12-0 win definitely marked his arrival as one of the world’s most exciting forward players.
8. Dieter Müller
A Bundesliga winner with FC Köln in 1977/78, Dieter Müller was the competition’s top scorer that season and also in the previous campaign.
Müller scored over 150 times for Köln in total and holds the Bundesliga record for most goals in a game: six in a 7-2 win over Werder Bremen in August 1977.
7. Telmo Zarra
Telmo Zarra is Athletic Club’s all-time top scorer and the legendary former Spain striker was the most prolific in La Liga history until many of his records were broken by Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.
Zarra, who scored 20 goals in 20 games for Spain, spent virtually his entire career at Athletic and netted six times in a 10-0 win over Lleida in November 1950.
6. Lothar Emmerich
One of the best German forwards of his generation, Lothar Emmerich had a long and successful spell at Borussia Dortmund in the 1960s.
In October 1965, Emmerich scored six times for Dortmund in an 8-0 win over Maltese side Floriana in the European Cup Winners’ Cup. The following year, he was part of the West Germany side which reached the World Cup final in England.
5. László Kubala
Barcelona built the Camp Nou because not enough fans could fit into their old Les Corts home to watch the legendary László Kubala.
Later immortalised in a statue outside the new stadium, Kubala was a legend in his day and scored 288 goals for the Catalan club, including unofficial games. Seven of those came in a 9-0 win over Sporting Gijón in La Liga in February 1952.
4. Pelé
One of the greatest players of all time and for many the best of them all, Pelé is also one of the highest scorers in football history.
Exactly how many he scored is up for debate, but he definitely netted eight in one match for Santos against Botafogo (SP) in the Campeonato Paulista in April 1964.
3. Edmundo
One of the most talented Brazilian forwards of his generation, Edmundo played for Serie A side Fiorentina and had five spells at Rio de Janeiro club Vasco da Gama.
In September 1997, Edmundo scored all six goals for Vasco in a 6-0 win over União São João, which is still a Brazilian top-flight record.
2. Julián Álvarez
Julián Álvarez signed for Manchester City in January 2022, but was loaned back to River Plate for the next six months.
The striker scored six times for the Buenos Aires club in an 8-1 win over Alianza Lima in the Copa Libertadores in May and was a World Cup winner with Argentina later in the year.
1. Ted Drake
A centre-forward who played for Arsenal and Southampton, Ted Drake holds the record for the most goals in a top-flight fixture in English football.
Drake scored all seven goals for Arsenal in a 7-1 win over Aston Villa back in December 1935. He was also capped five times by England, scoring six goals.
Bloomberg interviewed Stephen Curry to discuss the superstar’s growing business portfolio. Speaking to Emily Chang, the Chef revealed that his entrepreneurial drive is still in its nascent stages, but he wants to put more energy into his off-court ventures. The 36-year-old also touched on how his college experience at Davidson helped him prepare for a multi-faceted career.
“Going to Davidson, it allowed me to have a perspective of; it wasn’t just about basketball,” Curry said. “Like, there was a nice time management, intellectual journey at Davidson that kind of gave me a balance as well.”
Steph shared how his college experience wasn’t just about training and practice. The courses he studied allowed him to widen his perspective and view himself as more than just an athlete. Managing his time between practicing basketball and studying also gave him the skills to balance his on-court and off-court ventures.
But the two-time NBA MVP also had an interesting perspective on how basketball itself has lent him some of his business tools.
“Basketball is not an individual sport. It requires five people working in unison. You gotta have different roles that everybody buys into, and I think, a little bit of imagination as well. From a point guard position, you gotta have a little creativity and little flair — the way I play at least. And that’s helped off the court too,” Curry added.
His ability to collaborate and be imaginative have helped the Baby Faced Assassin generate a net worth of $240 million, one that will undoubtedly continue to grow once Steph hangs up his boots.
Despite setbacks, Stephen Curry remains an avid investor
Among his many smarts, the four-time NBA champion knows how to leverage the opportunities in his life. As a franchise player in San Francisco, that naturally meant setting up his own venture capital and investing in technology.
His portfolio includes a production company, Unanimous Media, a bourbon label named Gentleman’s Cut and his own venture capital firm, Penny Jar Capital. Using PJC, Curry has invested in a plethora of businesses to various levels of success.
The darkest spot on his portfolio probably remains the cryptocurrency exchange, FTX, which collapsed in 2022. Allegations of embezzlement and misuse quickly sapped the crypto exchange of any trust it had in the market, forcing them to file for bankruptcy.
The only relief for Curry, who was an early investor and had even appeared in advertisements for the brand, was that fellow sports stars like Shaquille O’Neal, Tom Brady, Naomi Osaka and Shohei Ohtani had all invested in the same company and suffered similar losses.
However, as the adage goes, shooters shoot. Steph remains unafraid in his business ventures, and it’s more than likely that we will see more investments from him once he draws the curtains on his NBA career.
While the Inside the NBA crew was on air to cover the Eastern Conference NBA Cup semi-final game between the Atlanta Hawks and the Milwaukee Bucks in Las Vegas, Shaquille O’Neal found a way to take shots at Kendrick Perkins.
During the show, host Ernie Johnson informed the panel that ABC would provide coverage for the other semifinal game. Before the media veteran could get through his announcement, Shaq jumped in to land a jab at Perkins.
He said, “I better not see Kendrick Perkins, I know that.”
ESPN’s studio was right next to that of TNT outside the T-Mobile Arena, so Shaq thought Perkins could hear him.
When the camera panned to Perkins’ crew, it seemed like they didn’t hear anything Shaq said. However, that didn’t stop the big fella from firing more shots. He said, “There’s gonna be some furniture moving if I see Kendrick Perkins.”
After Shaq’s hilarious ‘threats’ could not reach his target audience, he tried to pick a fight in his own camp.
“I’ll knock you’re a** right now, Chuck. Say I won’t,” Shaq said to Charles Barkley. To be fair, the Chuckster was poking the big fella for a while. Meanwhile, Kenny Smith placed a bet on the fight, keeping up with the customs of Vegas.
But Shaq then told him to wait till May 19th for the contest to be on pay-per-view. Both NBA legends have had a history with Perkins and there have been instances where they’ve hurt him.
Charles Barkley and Shaquille O’Neal once called Kendrick Perkins a “roach”
The TNT crew has a very different way of conducting business. They often do wild activities during segments and seem to have a lot more fun on set than any other show’s members. Earlier this year, they had a punching bag on set with Perkins’ face glued on it and Chuck and Shaq wore gloves to practice some shots.
When Barkley stepped up to practice some punches on the bag, he called Perkins a “roach.” Shaq joined him in the action too. This did not sit well with the former NBA star and during a conversation with Brandon “Scoop B” Robinson, he said, “A roach? That’s what y’all on? We kill roaches in Black neighborhoods. They’re everywhere.”
Shaq & Charles Barkley calling @KendrickPerkins a roach on National Television was a non negotiable for Perk.
— 👑 Brandon “Scoop B” Robinson (@ScoopB) June 10, 2024
“From another Black man to another Black man, you can’t never call nobody no roach. You might as well spit in my face. And I don’t have any beef with Charles or Shaq. My thing is the whole ‘roach’ thing. I don’t mind the punching bag, but the roach thing? C’mon man,” Perkins added.
Big Perk thought that the NBA legends crossed a line by calling him a roach. Hopefully, he will not take Shaq’s most recent jab the wrong way.
Chelsea have outside hopes of a Premier League title this season and host Brentford at Stamford Bridge on Sunday. The clash between both sides will not be shown in the UK but here FourFourTwo provides all the details on how you can watch along.
Chelsea will want to continue their impressive form in all competitions under Enzo Maresca having now won seven of their last eight games. A 3-1 win over Astana last time in the UEFA Conference League has all but secured their passage to the next stage of the new-look tournament.
Add that to an impressive 4-3 win over Spurs in the Premier League last week, Maresca’s side are really coming together all thanks to the form once again of star man Cole Palmer.
The England international has taken his tally for the season up to 11 and with six assists to go with it, the former Manchester City is again proving his weight in gold so far this season in a blue shirt.
As for Brentford, Thomas Frank’s side havent been the same since Ivan Toney’s high-profile departure to Saudi Arabia in the summer and the England international has left quite the mark in attack.
Yoane Wissa and Bryan Mbuemo have been left to shield the burden and with the Bees 9th in the table, their hopes of a European finish may prove a stretch to far this year.
Watch Chelsea vs Brentford in the UK
Unfortunately, Chelsea vs Brentford will not be shown on TV in the UK.

Despite being part of the same NBC stable, Premier League games on USA Network are not available live on the broadcasting giant’s streaming platform, Peacock. That means that to watch online, you’re looking at a cord-cutter – which offers TV channels in online packages – and these can be pricey.
Sling TV is one of the leading and cheapest services, starting from $40 a month for the Sling Blue package, which gets you USA Network. Fubo is another option, costing $79.99 a month (discounted to $49.99), but it does get you more live sport.
Other cord-cutting services that carry USA Network include YouTube TV, Hulu + Live TV, and DirecTV Stream.

The long-anticipated clash between Jake Paul and KSI may be closer than fans hoped, with a surprising $100 million condition now thrown into the mix. According to Jake’s manager, Nakisa Bidarian, the primary roadblock in negotiations is the weight class. However, speaking to Fred Beck, Bidarian revealed that if KSI can guarantee $100 million, Jake would be willing to drop down in weight to make the fight happen.
Bidarian doubled down on Jake’s status as the ‘A-side’ in the negotiations, citing other lucrative offers they’ve received as justification for the hefty demand. Any fight with KSI needs to reflect his value in the boxing world.
While the statement raised eyebrows, it also set social media ablaze as fans reacted to the audacious demand and debated whether KSI could, or should, meet it,
“Nahhhh these clowns are treating KSI like he’s canelo. $100M?? Never seen someone be so scared of a YouTuber before,” one fan quipped. Another fan found Bidarian’s demand too high and said, “100m’s to cut weight what world is he living in, these lot be making too many demands and don’t want to compromise makes no sense.”
According to this fan, both Paul and KSI are just too scared to put their reputations on the line, “I’ve never seen two men more scared to fight each other than KSI and Jake Paul.” While this fan had a completely different take on it as he said, “This why Jake dodging lol. KSI not putting up enough money apparently.”
But even if KSI was willing to pay the $100 million, as ‘The Nightmare‘ had recently stated he would not fight at 200 lbs, which is what Jake was fighting at, before the Tyson bout.
KSI denies a Cruiserweight Paul bout
The weight debate between Jake Paul and KSI has been discussed earlier on an episode of Logan Paul’s podcast, Impaulsive.
YouTuber, MrBeast, who was also present at the podcast, wasted no time pressing the Brit about the status of the bout, and KSI opened up about the ongoing struggle to agree on a weight class,
“I mean I’ve got a weight, 185, I’ve fought Tommy Fury at that weight as well. He (Jake) wants like 200…I can’t do it, I can’t get even heavier.”
“I find it too hard to fight at that weight,” KSI admitted, highlighting how the weight issue remains one of the biggest roadblocks in getting the fight finalized. Besides, since the Tyson fight broke every record it could, Paul has been called out by everyone and their moms. So it will be a surprise if he even considers fighting KSI now.
After weeks of suspense, Travis Hunter finally collected the college football award he most desired on Saturday night. The Colorado wide receiver/cornerback was named the 2024 Heisman Trophy winner, bringing his excellent season to the best possible conclusion.
Hunter’s fiancée, mother, and de facto family – head coach Deion Sanders and quarterback Shedeur Sanders – were all in attendance to witness him join college football’s most prestigious society.
Unfortunately, his father could not make the event. Shortly after winning Heisman honors, Hunter focused his speech on his dad in an emotional thank you.
“Dad, I love you. All the stuff you went through, man…. look at your oldest son. I did it for you, man. All the times you ain’t get to see me, and the times that you came to see my games.”
Travis Hunter Sr., the father of the 2024 Heisman Trophy winner, elected to stay in Boynton Beach for Saturday’s ceremony. Hunter Sr. revealed in an interview with the Palm Beach Post that he wouldn’t be in attendance:
“I don’t want to go. I want to be there when he gets married and when he gets drafted. I’m going to watch this from home.”
During his speech, an emotional Hunter looked back at the times his father attended his games and expressed how much that meant to him:
“From probably two games in high school to seeing me on TV every weekend and coming to see me, man, that means so much to me. I know you wanted to be here… trust me. I got you. I’m bringing the trophy home.”
In late September, Hunter’s dad was sentenced to 90 days in relation to a 2023 arrest and wasn’t able to attend games from the second half of the WR’s season. On not being able to go, he said,
“Yeah, it hurt. But it always hurts if I don’t go to a game.”
Fans celebrated Hunter’s achievement on social media. They applauded him for producing a terrific campaign and handling the brightest lights with humility and grace.
That’s pure heart Travis Hunter making sure his dad feels the moment, even from afar.
Hunter is just the fifth non-quarterback since 2000 — and the second two-way player ever — to win the Heisman Trophy. You can watch his full acceptance speech here.
Being recognized as one of the greatest one-on-one players is an honor only a few athletes have had. While opinion varies, similar to the GOAT debate, it is another great basketball discourse that excites the fans. On a recent episode of the Run It Back, the panel discussed it, and Chandler Parsons declared that Kevin Durant would come out victorious against everyone.
The question was who would be the best player in a one-on-one tournament. Parsons said that it wouldn’t matter whether the list is current or all-time as the answer will remain unchanged.
He said, “Kevin Durant. Now, all-time, size, length, defense, offense, no one can guard him.” KD certainly has the size advantage above most players because at 6’11, his listed height, he has fluidity in his movement. Parsons then brought up another great one-on-one player into the mix to further strengthen his claim.
He said, “He can guard Kyrie better than Kyrie can guard him.” When asked if he thinks KD can beat Kyrie Irving, Parsons stated that it shouldn’t even be a question. The former NBA star believes that if anyone can beat KD in a one-on-one matchup, they’ll have to be freakishly tall like Victor Wembanyama.
He said, “I mean, Kyrie is nasty but I would someone big and long like a Wemby…someone who is nasty like that.” Even though it was a small sample size, the poll under the show’s post also had KD winning with 62.5% over Kyrie, Wemby, and Kawhi Leonard, who was Lou Williams’ pick.
Kevin Durant is a smart choice for one-on-one matchups
For years, KD has been described as the ‘perfect basketball player.’ Many people believe that physically, there isn’t an athlete better built for the sport. He is tall, strong, and has great body control. KD is one of the best three-level scorers in the history of the league.
He is incredible with post-game, mid-range jumper, and 3-point shots, all rolled into one. He is also one of the most impactful offensive players in league history. The 36-year-old has been at the top of his game for 17 years. He has been featured on the lists prepared by several media outlets on the best one-on-one players.
On top of his excellent offensive game, Kevin Durant is a brilliant defender as well. Not only can he close out shooters on the perimeter, but also hold his own in the paint.
Picking KD for a one-on-one matchup from the current lot of players is a really smart choice as it almost guarantees a win before the game even starts.
Edge rusher Maxx Crosby is the face of the Las Vegas Raiders. His rise to NFL prominence is one of terrific perseverance. He is also recognized as one of the league’s true iron men. He played 88 consecutive regular season games to begin his career before finally missing his first action back in Week 4 this year. Unfortunately, he’s now slated to spend more time on the shelf.
Saturday evening, Crosby took to social media and announced he’d be out for the remainder of the season. He reinjured the ankle he hurt early in the year last Sunday against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. His ailment, now more severe, requires surgery.
Fan support quickly flooded in for the three-time Pro Bowler. His wife, Rachel, also backed her husband via Instagram, saying, “We love our guy.”
Crosby, 27, has totaled 59.5 sacks across his first six seasons in the league. His dominance for a floundering Raiders organization makes him the subject of persistent trade rumors. Las Vegas has him under contract through 2026, but that fact didn’t keep opposing fanbases from clamoring for him to join their team while wishing him well.
At the same time, Raiders fans didn’t yield in their admiration for their star. Las Vegas’ woebegone season has given them an opportunity to secure a quarterback early in the 2025 NFL Draft.
They believe when Crosby suits up next, it will be alongside a franchise signal-caller in Sin City.
The Raiders (2-11) would select No. 2 overall if the season ended today. They’ll try to lessen those odds by defeating the Atlanta Falcons (6-7) in Week 15. The Monday Night Football affair kicks off at 8:30 p.m. E.T. on ESPN.
Joe Burrow reminded everyone he’s still the highest-paid player in the league. The LSU alum, who signed a record-breaking $275 million deal last year, recently made his first big statement purchase. During a conversation with teammates Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins, Burrow revealed he bought a $3 million Batmobile—the iconic car from the Batman trilogy.
While the vehicle is fully functional, it’s not “street-legal,” leaving Shannon Sharpe and Chad “Ocho” Johnson scratching their heads over why Burrow would spend $3 million on a car he can’t drive. During the latest episode of The Nightcap, Shannon Sharpe and Chad “Ocho” Johnson reacted to Joe Burrow’s extravagant $3 million Batmobile purchase.
“I mean it ain’t street legal. You collect cars, Unc don’t you? Yeah, but they need to street street-legal. I gotta be able to drive them on the street.”
Joining the discussion was rapper Cordae, who was shocked at Burrow’s ability to spend so much on a single item, calling it a “flex” purchase.
Sharpe compared the Batmobile buy to purchasing a $3 million house, humorously noting, “It ain’t moving nowhere because that’s a house.” Ocho speculated that Burrow must be a die-hard fan of the Batman franchise to justify dropping that kind of money on the iconic vehicle.
While Sharpe admitted to being a Batman fan himself, he made it clear he wouldn’t spend $3 million on a car. Ocho chimed in, offering a different perspective, stating “Everyone has their vices.”
Even though he prides himself on being thrifty and would never make such a purchase, he understands that for Burrow, this was about indulging in something he truly loves.
Chad believes that this purchase from Joe will pay off down the line when he decides to sell it.
Ocho believes Burrow’s batmobile could be worth millions down the road
Chad Johnson speculated that Burrow’s Batmobile is more likely a collector’s item. He explained that purchases like these aren’t uncommon among collectors, who often hold onto such items for years. Over time, these rare collectibles can appreciate significantly in value.
Johnson pointed out that Joe’s $3 million investment could eventually pay off, as the Batmobile has the potential to be worth even more in the future, highlighting the long-term financial reward that might come from owning such an iconic piece of pop culture history.
“Something like that would be a collector’s item. something like Jay Leno, and Rick Ross, some of those dudes collect things. It’s not street legal, you put it up and save it and later on down the road, you paid $3 million for it, Think about 10-20 years from now who knows what it might cost or what it might be worth.”
While Burrow has yet to take delivery of the Batmobile, there’s no doubt he can afford it. Even though he likes to keep up appearances, Joe also doesn’t come across as someone who would spend such a staggering amount without careful thought.
